Copying Files from a PC to a USB Flash Drive

A custom USB flash drive is an invaluable, portable tool for storing information from your PC that you can then take with you wherever you go. People use custom USB drives to store files too large to take up needed space on their PC (such as music and video files) or to easily transfer files to a PC situated elsewhere (such as from home to office, or vice-versa).

Copying files to a custom USB flash drive is quite simple, and learning to do so takes only a few minutes. To copy files from any PC running Microsoft Windows to a custom USB flash drive, simply perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the custom USB drive into any of your PC’s available USB ports.
  2. Open the External Drive Folder (if it doesn’t automatically open for you), by doing the following:
    1. Click Start
    2. Click My Computer
    3. Double-click the icon for your custom USB drive or external hard drive (the name of the drive – i.e. Removable Disk (E:) - will vary)
  3. Open in another Window the folder(s) containing the file(s) you wish to copy to your custom USB flash drive.
  4. One-by-one, right-click on each of the files you wish to copy to your custom USB drive and select Copy.
  5. Click back onto the window for your custom USB hard drive.
  6. Right-click and select Paste.

Now your files have been copied to your external custom USB flash drive, but you’re not done yet. To avoid corrupting your files or damaging your custom USB drive, you must properly and safely remove it from your PC. To do this, complete the following steps:

  1. Click back onto the My Computer window.
  2. Right-click on your custom USB flash drive.
  3. Select Eject.

Once the icon for your custom USB drive disappears from the My Computer window, it is now safe to remove your custom USB flash drive from your PC’s USB port.

Now that you know how to copy files from a PC to a custom USB flash drive, you have the skills needed to free up valuable space on your PC and take your vital files with you everywhere you go.
